Research

Welcome.

For up to date posts on all my work, please refer to my blog pages linked above
http://chrisnewell.eu/blog-3/

I am currently a lecturer in Digital Media at the University of Hull.

I have been ill for three years with cancer but it is under control for the most part.

My core research interest is the performing voice. Although I am now an academic I have also been a professional opera director but weirdly my PhD is in Computer Science (thesis pdf) hence I have an interest in the artificial and human voice.   My research is interdisciplinary but falls broadly into two camps – 1) the work I do with the scientific community on artificial speech -2) the work I do with the artistic community on opera. My ambition is to mash these two up. In the meantime I have organised this site into these two broad categories of activity but there is a lot of crossover. The Blog is where I publish news about interdisciplinary projects I am involved in. Please feel free to add comments or get involved.

I am delighted to hear from any potential collaborators, current or ex students, colleagues and friends. Please e-mail me [email protected]

I completed my PhD in Computer Science at The University of York in the Human-Computer Interaction Group and have a MSc (distinction) in Interactive Multimedia Production from The University of Huddersfield. I also have undergraduate qualifications from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and L’Università per Stranieri di Perugia in Italy.

At Hull I teach BA/BSc/MA modules in:

  • Interaction Experience and Engagement
  • Understanding Digital Media Tools and Platforms
  • Production Planning and Professional Skills
  • Creative Leadership and Entrepreneurship
  • Work Placement

Interdisciplinarity: “… a mutual appropriation and reappropriation of tools and techniques from one field to another with no assumption of a shared understanding either at the level of problems or at the level of concerns and background.” (Franchi & Güzeldere 2005, p.101)

I would be interested in supervising research students in interdisciplinary projects combining any of – creative economy/(soft) computer science/HCI/music/theatre performance and opera.

The Creative Speech Technology Network that I ran with Alistair Edwards  is documented here http://crestnetwork.org.uk/

I write frequent very self-indulgent and opinionated posts on my cancer on my blog www.gravityisahat.com and even more self indulgent poetry here https://www.fleeting.gravityisahat.com/wp – currently closed
